Little England

With its cool climate, tea plantations, and faux Tudor buildings, Nuwara Eliya is the bastion of Little England.  First stop is the 1885 Pedro Tea Factory before a stroll in Victoria Park; Lunch at The Grand Hotel or St. Andrew's Hotel; Hakgala Botanical Gardens (1861); tea at the Hill Club (1876) before returning home.

 

Distance: 55 miles (3 hours).

Take Two Cities & A Living Pharmacy

The outing starts in Kurunegala; which may co-incide with a weekly Fruit & Vegetable Market. Thence to Seylan, the Fairtrade handloom maker (toys, clothes, homeware) and Yapahuwa, capital of a lost kingdom.  The journey home is via the Ganewatta Medicinal Plant Gardens, a 22 acres botanical garden devoted to medicinal tropical plants.

Shop Till You Drop

A day of retail therapy begins with the craftsmen of Kandy Brassware Village before Odel & Selyn (clothing, homeware, Fair-trade, handloom, curios & toys) & Kandy City Centre shopping mall; refreshments at the Queen’s Hotel before moving to Peradeniya: Sthree, a women’s social enterprise homeware shop; famous jewellers: Premadasa, Hemachandras & Gamini Gems; Prema Antique Store; & Waruna’s Antique Shop, the country’s best antique shop.

 

Distance: Round trip = 46 miles (2 ½ hours).

The Kingdom of the Sleeping Buddha

Polonnaruwa’s monumental structures, crafted with an almost unrivalled delicacy is the last great achievement of the old Anuradhapuran Kingdom. A stop for lunch at the nearby Kandalama Hotel is recommended.

Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage    

There is no escaping the sense of awe and delight at seeing so many of elephants at Pinnewala, especially for the twice daily elephant river bathing (10am & 2pm).

Elephant Safari

Journey to see the wild elephants at Minneriya National Park, a massive dry zone reserve that is a gathering place for wild migrating elephants – and home to over 20 other mammals, 160 bird species, over three dozen reptiles and amphibians and 75 species of butterflies. 

 

Distance: 68 miles (2 and a half hours).

Trekking in The Knuckles

Spend a day amidst mountains reaching 1,800 metres.  The 155 sq kilometres of wild terrain that is The Knuckles is a mesmerising habitat of forests, waterfalls and rivers, shot through with walking tracks.

The Bible of Sri Lankan Buddhism

It is impossible to overestimate the importance of the Aluvihare Rock Temple, a network of caves and temples where 1st C BC monks wrote down the (until then) oral precepts of Buddhism, endangered by Chola invasers.
