Caring for elephants

The Millennium Elephant Foundation is an organisation and charity set up to rescue and care for captive Asian elephants in Sri Lanka.

Stretching across 15 acres, it was established in 1999 with assistance from the World Society for the Protection of Animals (now World Animal Protection) and unveiled as a sanctuary with proper caretaking facilities and medical services for captive elephants.  Since then, it has cared for more than 80 elephants.

It also runs the Footsteps Elephant Consultancy, the only mahout training program recognised and accredited by the Sri Lankan Department of Wildlife.

The sanctuary offers visitors a great range of experiences, including feeding the elephants, walking and bathing with them, safe, respectful interactions, and lots of fantastic photo opportunities.
